How have we not talked about stake dances before? This is a veritable treasure trove of horror/shame/awkwardness/things-that-are-funny-ten-years-after-the-fact!
I hereby declare it Stake Dance Week. I know it’s Thursday. Stake Dance Week goes from today until next Thursday.
Today, let’s talk about the songs that are ALWAYS played at stake dances:
Sandstorm (ugh)
Cotton Eye Joe
YMCA (ha)
I Will Survive
Lady in Red
Kryptonite
Blue (Da Ba Dee Da Ba Da)
something excruciating by Creed
The “DJ” at our stake dances also generally played “Nothing Else Matters” by Metallica several times. Depending on how things were going with his on-again, off-again girlfriend, “Nothing Else Matters” could be played up to eight times in a single evening.
Once, at a young single adult dance, after at least an hour went by without a single song with a danceable beat, I went up to the DJ.
“Could you please play a song by a black person?” I asked.
“You mean like Will Smith?” said the DJ.
“I mean like Jay-Z.”
“Who?”
“Never mind,” I said, and made a swift exit.
What’s your stake dance playlist?
